The operational cost of wind energy can be considered in three broad categories - the energy revenue lost through downtime, the variable cost of measures taken to reduce that revenue loss and fixed costs associated with the operation and maintenance.

The selection of optimal approach to O&M relies on minimising the total of the first two of these; this is where DNV GL's well-established  simulation process comes into its own - allowing clients to develop their own O&M strategy and resourcing before they get into the field.
